Catholic christenings?
The principle function of a godparent (at the baptism) is to serve as an official witness of the event. Therefore all you really have to do is be there. When the parents bring the child up to be baptized you go up too and stand close by and watch. That's about it. The rest of the time you will sit in the same pew as the parents. In so doing you will participate in the 2,000 year old sacramental tradition of the true Christian Church, a wonderful honor. Sadly, some unauthorized manmade Christian churches have abandoned this essential Christian teaching during the past few hundred years. But the fullness of truth in the one Church founded by Jesus Christ never changes. After the baptism the function of a godparent is to ist the parents in raising the child in the Christian faith.
